{Finally had the chance to start watching the second season of House of Cards last night. Having been inspired by set design and production design before, I knew I had to share Frank and Clair Underwood’s townhouse from the show ever since I saw the bathroom scene in the first season. That room was so beautiful - and perfect for the scene, and the stage of the story. While traditional at first glance, there is restraint and minimalism shown through in how spare the Underwoods’ Italianate townhouse is. Their decor choices have a more traditional Washington, D.C., look: a neutral colour palette, elegant and subdued fabrics, brass lamps, dark wood trim, gold frames, light fixtures appropriate to their mid-1800s townhouse and a bit of tufting here and there. Production Designer Steve Arnold mentioned in an interview that “For instance, in Francis’s townhouse and in his office we chose things that had sharpness and edge to them. He’s such a nefarious character, and we wanted things around him to have metaphorical teeth – in very subtle ways. For instance a table leg might be very pointy and sharp, because he is that kind of a character.” Just have a look at the stools in the kitchen, and I never realized how ‘pointy’ Chippendale chairs were! I finished the first episode yesterday, and can’t wait to see the rest of the season!} -- source link
