classicalmonuments:Tychaion of Aere (Tyche Temple of Al-Sanamayn)Al-Sanamayn (Aere), Hauran, Syria191 CEAncient Aere, which now bears the Arabic name is-Sanamin which means “thetwo idols,”Temple, Date 191 CE The chief ruin here is that of a small temple (Ill. 287), which stands on the north side of the birkeh(reservoir) near its northeast angle, quite apart from the village and from other ruins. From inscriptions this temple is known to have been sacred to Tyche, and is definitely designated as a Tychaion in one of them. The temple faces the north, it is quite well preserved, but for its north façade which has been completely destroyed and rebuilt again from its own fragments (Ill. 288) at some time when the building was crudely converted into a Mosque. It has perhaps served also as a stronghold of the Arabs. The building was originally so placed that it protruded well into the water of the birkeh; but the space on the east side has been filled in. The site must have been a very beautiful one, with the reservoir enclosed within a colonnade of which evidence still remains. Keep reading -- source link
