*~BWAAAAAGH~*There are many reasons black holes are fascinating. The forever mysterious nature of their interiors, the way they’re both one of the simplest and most complex objects in the Universe at the same time, just the fact that they eat stars (I mean come on, how many things can you count on your hand that can eat stars?!)…the list goes on.But for me, I think the biggest reason black holes appeal to me is that they’re basically the closest the Universe gets to space dragons. I mean, hear me out:-They breath jets of fire from their mouths-They’re dangerous predators-Nobody that enters their lairs ever returns-They gather big hoards of material and lie at the center of it-They’re ancient and shaped the cosmos long ago…I remember once on Tumblr someone said they wished space dragons existed. “Dragons that have entire stars and planetary systems as their hoards! Dragons whose breath makes galaxies! Dragons that warp space and time!”All I could really think at the time was “dude, you just described a supermassive black hole.”Of course black holes are not literally dragons. But unlike dragons, they are real things that exist in this world. And honestly, just the fact that the laws of physics can even create something like that is just cool.Humans design cool things all the time. But when nature does it on its own, through processes that have no grand design of their own…that’s a whole other level of impressive. -- source link
