Aside from diversifying our collection to include more artwork by artists of color, women, and LGBTQ artists, Arnold’s legacy at the museum extends beyond the walls. Arnold’s first official act as director was to march in Brooklyn’s West Indian Labor Day Parade. His priority has always been to welcome the community into the Museum—the creation of Target First Saturdays (evenings of free art, live performance, which I am honored to participate in planning today) is probably the strongest and most recognized example. In the spirit of Arnold’s commitment and responsiveness to the communities of our surrounding neighborhoods, West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA) presents performances by CASYM Steel Band Orchestra and Contemporary Dance Theater at tomorrow night’s #DiverseWorks Collective Communities event honoring Arnold LehmanPosted by Lauren ZelayaImage: Catherine Green (American, born 1952).
