heracleid:Belief and superstition in the the evil eye (Greek, “μάτι”) in Greece has been consistently prevalent since about the 6th century BC. Eye symbols to ward off any sort of afflictions were originally found on pottery and drinking vessels. Through the Ottoman years and mingling with eastern culture (compare the colour scheme to a khamza, for instance) it now takes the form of a blue talisman. Though mostly folk belief, it is nowadays often used alongside Christian iconography - to the dismay of many hard-line Orthodox Christians. It is decorated on newborns and young children, who are believed to be more susceptible to the evil eye. -- source link
