thioxduncan:star-anise:grison-in-space:girl-torture:russianconcussion:I really like what this physicist, Lamar Glover, has to say in Behind the Curve. + this part from Spiros Michalakis:Incredibly good take which is really rare for these topicsYES THIS JESUS FUCK THIS THIS THISI spent way too much time screaming on twitter about this during the Evolution public education and outreach segment, I’m just saying. This is why I spend as much time as I do trying to teach people about disability, queer theory, feminism, and decolonization. I get this.AND.There are some people who are resistant to being taught something differently. The frustrating thing, if you WANT to engage and figure out where these people diverged so you can show them differently - the frustrating thing is, you don’t know who is eager to relearn or who isn’t UNTIL you talk to them. And for some folks, talking to these conspiracy theorists can be incredibly hard. Particularly if folks had family members who had fallen down these rabbit holes and then disowned the family members who don’t “believe” like they do.So let’s try a couple things:1. let’s engage these people, because you just never know who would be eager to relearn something, and2. let’s not ask vulnerable people to do the engaging with conspiracy theorists. Here is where people with certain privileges can step in and REALLY do their part. Because us marginalized folks are tired of trying to counter these points and not being listened to because of our marginalized status. After all, why would a Truther listen to someone who fits the mold of the very people they’re taught to hate? -- source link
