Today’s compilation:Infinite Beat Vol. 11997Drum n Bass / Jungle / Breakbeat / AbstractA lot of times, when a major label, like Geffen Records in this case, does one of these “dispatches from the electronic underground” types of comps, they have a way of coming off as inauthentic with this “how do you do, fellow kids?” kind of energy and feel. But that’s really not the case here at all with Infinite Beat Vol. 1. I don’t know who Geffen knew to compile this thing, but whoever it was was probably a UK native who had their ear right to the ground with regards to drum n bass / jungle and breakbeat at the time. This compiler ended up doing a bang-up job by not making any super obvious choices and managed to string together a comp that’s chock full of tracks that stray off the beaten path instead. It’s both totally unexpected and welcome. Commendable effort.I don’t love every track on here, but there’s a trio that definitely deserve mention. Naked Funk’s breakbeat piece, “Pleasing The Korean,” blends suspenseful horns, a little bit of bloopy sci-fi futurism, and Morriconean 60s guitar twang to yield a really sweet groove; Squarepusher delivers a monster of a track by doing his iconically chaotic Jackson Pollock drill n bass thing like only he knows how; and Nico / Fierce provide a dnb tune that grooves like no other dnb tune I’ve ever heard in my life before, thanks in large part to its tons of wicked sub-bass and extended drum breaks.Highlights:Skycutter & Kiki Mojo - “Crystal Blue”Naked Funk - “Pleasing The Korean”Squarepusher - “Problem Child”The Advocate - “Talkin’ To Me”Snuggles+Slak - “The Reckoning”Nico / Fierce - “Input” -- source link
