What’s the current state of Instagram? Is the dust settling? ️ This week the Washington Post reported in May 2021, there were 80M TikTok downloads — 7X more than Instagram’s. No wonder IG is freaking out. I don’t think it’s time to flee, ♀️ but if you want to explore some of the alternatives, here are a few: ️♂️ Tumblr (327M users), is free. It started as a favorite for photographers who used it as a portfolio site. Its image quality is better than IG’s & it also encourages engagement, but interaction is less instantaneous. It’s linked to Instagram so you can cross post to both places, but cross-posts don’t support carousels. Twitter (192M) & Reddit (52M) —both free — are popular for sharing photos, but neither are very elegant & photography communities are fragmented, but engagement is there. You can create a “list” on Twitter to follow photography friends & it has a 280 character caption limit. On Reddit, search for photo communities that interest you. You can share photos, write a post, comment & respond, but it seems quiet. We’re spoiled by the simplicity & beauty of the IG grid & the great interaction. ️ I wonder if vertical videos will connect us in the same way? Flickr (112M) is another site with superior photo quality. The Pro account comes at a cost. It’s a great platform for viewing photography & there is engagement, but not as instantaneous as IG’s. Other channels include 500px (15M), VSCO (4M) & Gala on iOS. I’ve used 500px for browsing & VSCO as a photo editing app. Gala is small & offers options between chronological timelines like the original Instagram, or “discovery” timelines based on algorithms. Who knows? ♀️It could take a while to change, or the video imperative could diminish. I’m planted here for the next while but will continue cross-posting to Tumblr. Are you going to explore other options or not worry about it? ♂️ Photos: #flowers #onmywalk #onmywalktoday #Seattlesummer #pixelphoto #pixelphotography #macro_delight #macroflower #centraldistrict #summercolors #seattleflowers (at Central District, Seattle) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRIx-mUsW2X/?utm_medium=tumblr -- source link
