This is currently what the Martian colonies look like.Biodomes are needed because the planet still has yet to be terraformed to Earth-like conditions, primarily temperature and atmospheric composition, but that is being seen to.Ironically, one of the methods being used to make the planet suitable for humans is one of the methods that assisted in and was ridiculed for climate change on Earth, fossil fuel burning,Coal was found to be extremely abundant on Mars and is used to generate energy for the colonies. But unlike on Earth, carbon emissions are a good thing. Mars barely has an atmosphere so by burning fossil fuels, CO2 is realised and will actually help create an atmosphere and begin to warm the planet up, allowing for a more stable climate.Once there is a dense enough atmosphere, which admittedly will take hundreds of years, the next step will be plants. Since plants are able to process both carbon dioxide and oxygen, they will be able to start to convert some of the carbon dioxide into oxygen, which will allow humans to breathe on the planet and fully colonize without the need for biodomes or pressurized suits.Ultimately, this is what Mars is hoped to look like.Though this plan to terraform Mars is incredibly long-term, as in thousands of years long-term, the goal isn’t to make a new place to live as fast as possible, but to prove we CAN make a new place to live, being able to alter a planet and make it habitable for humans. Most planets we will come across in the future will not be at all habitable, and most will be of such composition they can’t be terraformed at all. But for those few rocky spheres in the Goldilocks Zone of their parent stars, we will be able to reach and one day live upon. -- source link
