Perhaps the most famous great white shark was the one depicted in the movie “Jaws”, about a white shark that terrorized a small resort town. While the novel and movie are classics, the resulting stigma attached to great whites has resulted in them being unfairly persecuted and feared by humans. Great whites have thus been overfished and hunted. Shark culls primarily targeting great whites have taken place in Australia as recently as 2014. Author Peter Benchley has stated that he regrets the effect his work has had upon the public perception of sharks, and great whites in particular, and spent the last years of his life working to educate the public on sharks and their role in the ocean. -- source link
