Celtic Gods; Stone and Pottery Heads, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle, 18.3.18.Hadrian’s Wall and the Antonine Wall came about in part due to large pockets of resistance in the form of native Britons and Picts in the area. Archaeology around the vicinity of Hadrian’s Wall has unearthed a number of Celtic Gods stone and pottery heads. The first image is one of the finest examples of a Celtic figurehead found in Britain. It is a lead filled bronze face mask and was used as a steelyard weight. It was found in Old Carlisle, near Wigton. The others are also from the vicinity. The penultimate image is a Celtic deity but it also features classical stylistic elements. -- source link
