Hoogerwerf, 1939On October 28, 1938, Hoogerwerf made a photographs that were to become famous as they are the only ones of a living wild adult male Java tiger ever made. In his book, he tells the story, he was in his tree at 8 in the morning. Just before noon on the first day, a tiger appeared and went straight for the kali. At less than 30 feet from Hoogerwerf, who went unnoticed in his hide, the tiger drank in the only place of shade. Hoogerwerf was amazed at the size of the muscled fore-arms and the paws. When the tiger had had enough, he sat on his haunches for some time and then slowly returned to the forest. Some time later that day, Hoogerwerf measured the tracks the tiger had left. The width of the front paw was 15,5 cm. overall and the pad width was 9 cm.
