americanwizarding:“Any idea where it came from yet?” a voice asked, cutting through the silence and breaking Jabir’s concentration. “Somewhere in the southern reaches of the South China Sea, I think. Or the West Philippine Sea, or whatever the hell we’re supposed to call it. Notice the distinctive blue and green-” Jabir began, pointing a single long finger at the creature’s tentacles, which were tentatively probing the protective bubble around its watery enclosure, before being interrupted by Brogan.“I don’t mean originally.” the red-headed agent said in exasperation, taking a seat behind the desk, “I meant who the hell dumped it in the sewer? Unless you think it got here on its own?” "Unlikely,” Jabir responded, holding up his hand to measure one of the suction cups against his palm and then flipping a page of LeGrande’s Index of Oriental Sea Monsters, trying to narrow down the genus of the octopus, LeGrande was an arrogant purist and a racist to boot, but the bastard knew his cephalopods. And well he should, having never met one he didn’t try to eat, “It wouldn’t have survived much less enjoyed the chilly water of the north Atlantic.”“Well it seemed to like the sewers well enough,” a third voice chimed, and for the first time Jabir tore his eyes away from the octopus and noticed Brogan had company.“Ah, yes,” The other agent said, “Jabir, this is Deniz, from the TRT. He’s going to working with us on this case.” Ah. Trade Regulation and Transportation, “Smugglers then?”“That’s what we’re thinking,” the young man replied, scratching his chin and averting his eyes, “About two weeks ago some of our agents busted a mail-order monster ring. They had a couple griffin eggs, a cage of silenced fwoopers, and even an occamy and its nest..” he said, trailing off as a single giant eye turned to investigate him. The cephalopod’s skin began to gently shift colors, the green and blue stripes moving like a barber pole across its skin, “Why is it doing that?”“I think it likes you,” Brogan said, grinning, and then reached back and gave Deniz a little smack on the shoulder, “You sly dog you.”Deniz looked perturbed, but Jabir looked horrified, “A full grown, brooding, occamy? If that got out and its eggs hatched…”“Catastrophe,” Deniz agreed, “A brooding occamy in New York could hurt a lot of people.” “Ah…er…yes,” Jabir agreed, not having thought of that. He’d been distracted by the sheer damage a full grown occamy with a set of hatchlings to feed would do to the local ecosystem. “And that’s not the worst,” Brogan said, looking grim, and motioned to the TRT agent.“We found some aquariums.” Deniz supplied. “Oh? What was in them?” “Nothing,” the other man replied, “They were empty. And open.” They all looked speculatively up at the octopus, which was doing little cartwheels in its enclosure, clearly trying to get the strange agent’s attention. It was amazing the levels of friendliness giant cephalopods tended to exhibit. Even LeGrande admitted as much, speculating many “attacks” on muggle ships were actually the creature’s curiosity and desire to make friends rather than any real malice. But still, giant octopi in the sewers of New York? “The alligators are not going to be happy,” Jabir said softly, and his supervisor snorted. “So you’ll help us round them up?” Deniz asked, trying to ignore the large, soulful eyes that had affixed upon him. “…what are going to do with them afterwards?” Jabir asked, arching a single perfect eyebrow and folding his arms. The TRT agent blinked, and looked at Brogan for support. The senior agent shrugged without comment and seemed prepared to wait for his answer.“Uh…crate them back up and…send them home?” Deniz supplied after a moment’s beat. Brogan’s face instantly split into a smile, crinkling his freckles, “Excellent. Then consider the full resources of the Bureau of Conservation and Magical Resources at your disposal. Or at least our office.” he supplied, standing and slapping the young TRT agent on the back, “Jabir will be your liason.” A sudden jet of water shot from the edge of the floating tank of water and smacked the senior agent right in the face. There was a moment of stunned silence as Brogan wiped brine off his face and they all looked at the octopus, which clearly didn’t appreciate hands being laid on its chosen beloved. Brogan let loose a sharp bark of a laugh, “Fine then. You can have the octopus too.”Still laughing he strode out of the room, leaving two agents and an amorous cephalopod behind.(Image Source: 1870 edition of 20000 Leagues Under the Sea) -- source link
