Red RocksThis shot comes from Red Rock Canyon State Park in California. This site is interlayered with reddish sandstones and volcanic tuffs – the product of explosive volcanic eruptions about 18 million years ago. As the North American plate first contacted the Pacific Plate, basins began to open as the crust of the continent was twisted and pulled apart. This process also triggered volcanic eruptions, leading to alternating volcanic layers and sedimentary layers at this site. The sandstones contain a bit of iron that has been oxidized (rusted) to give the color found today. There are a couple of people in the upper right of this frame for scale.-JBBImage credit: Anita Gouldhttps://flic.kr/p/21HcHzsReference:https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1669/pdf/pp1669.pdf -- source link
