Roman civil war commanders - Lucius Pinarius ScarpusJulius Caesar’s grandnephew and also a heir in the next grade. He was to receive 1/8 of Caesar’s estate, but renounced his share in favor of his cousin Octavian. In a civil war against Brutus and Cassius he teamed up with Marcus Antonius commanding legions in Greece. During the following years Scarpus remained loyal to Antonius and triumvir assigned him military commander of Cyrenaica. After the battle of Actium Scarpus changed sides though; he neglected Antonius’ pleas for help and handed over his four legions to Octavianus. Scarpus was also rewarded since after the war Octavianus appointed his cousin as the governor of Cyrenaica.During his years In Libya Scarpus issued coins in honor of both Antonius and Augustus, and above you can see a few examples.
