t-funster:Brazilian Mythology October: Saci PererêThere is no supernatural being as well-known as Saci Pererê, whose figure is more than just mythological, but a part of Brazilian pop culture and character from many children’s books. The legend originates in a Tupi-Guarani entity called Yâci-yâterê, a magical one-legged child, but fully became what we know when it was appropriated and transformed in the 18th century by the enslaved African people brought to Brazil. The indigenous child with a tail coming from the South became a young black man after arriving to the North, mixing an African clay-and-reed pipe to the European red Phrygian cap. It is said Saci hops in a single leg because he lost his other one in a Capoeira fight. His best trait is his playful personality; Saci is a trickster at soul, and reveals in doing small mischievous acts, never to truly hurt, but to annoy humans. He makes strange noises, frightens horses, hides domestic objects and children’s toys, sets farm animals loose, and any other minor harm he think of.His tale is very Brazilian in all its multicultural syncretism, and October 31st became the Saci Day in 2005 to honor and preserve our national mythology.
