West Side Story (2021) This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals. West Side Story has one scene where a fan is blowing in a window, and the shadow cast from that fan creates a severe strobe effect. Those familiar with the original film or musical can be warned that this occurs during the song A Boy Like That. When the song transitions to a slower tempo or speed, the rest of the film is safe to watch. There is a considerable amount of handheld camera work in this film, but the camera never shakes violently. Just like with the original film, this version opens with a long shot looking downward and moving left.Flashing Lights: 4/10. Motion Sickness: 4/10. TRIGGER WARNING: Openly racist characters, who use multiple slurs against Hispanic people, and aggressively harass a woman late in the film. A transgender character is repeatedly misgendered. Compared to the original film, expect more harsh violence with less dance-related stylization. -- source link
