saltiestgempearl:aroace-space-case: adhd-community: I always try to take people really seriously when they use one of these - if they don’t actually mean it, it often makes them realise they are being rude without being too confrontation/ making them too defensive. Them: “I’m so ADHD haha” Me: oh really? It’s actually quite common in this industry. Fast paced environment, constantly changing. It’s a great fit for… Them: oh no not really, I just mean I’m a little distracted Me: oh…. okay. Them: ha…. …. yeah…. … … Nevermind. OR Them: she was psychotic! Me: she had a psychotic episode in the office? That must have been really scary for her and her colleagues. Did they make sure she got to a doctors/was able to get what she needed to feel a little better?? Them: oh no… I just mean she was angry… Me: oh… okay. …… :) Normally I find people don’t mean any harm by it, and by just acting confused and having them explain it they often realise that what they said is actually really not okay. If people accuse me of taking things too seriously I explain I come from a mental health background where people actually do talk about these disorders freely and openly, and it’s important to me that I take people at their word because I wouldn’t want to accidently laugh off someone’s struggles. Very rarely do they have anything to say to that. [ID: The meme of people putting their hands in a circle in solidarity. The centre says, “having to hear unfunny/unnecessary jokes were ppl pretend to have what you have” and the arms are people with autism, people with OCD, people with PTSD, people with psychosis, bipolar people, people with schizophrenia, people with personality disorders, and people with ADHD. \End ID]Caption by @a-captions-blog i wanted to rb w/ the addition from @adhd-community so I copy and pasted. If you rather I didn’t pls tell me I’ll change it!! Really appreciate the addition because half the time I feel like a Bad ND ™ or something because I say things like “I’m so OCD about this” but I mean it literally. Same with things like “having an ADHD moment.” I know some people feel like using that kind of language at alll is harmful, but some of us really do mean it!And I’ve actually had the opposite experience of that reblog before, like Coworker: I’m so OCD about this Me: You have OCD?Them: oh uh…yeah, actually.Or another person who made a “so ADHD” comment was like “oh no I don’t” but then paused, and admitted they actually weren’t sure and were considering getting tested because of some struggles they had recently related to attention. So yeah, all for raising awareness of this stuff, but I’m REALLY happy to see positivity and acceptance around the language. Just treat it critically is all~ Oh I have totally had that too and it’s always really nice!!! Like…Coworker: my OCD is playing up something HARDMe: oh do you have OCD?Coworker: ….Me: …. :/Coworker: yeah actually but I generally don’t talk about it much Me: oh :) that’s chill, I won’t mention or it or anything Always a pleasant surprise. -- source link
