Here’s a little BLUESDAY inspiration from our Arts of the Americas collection, currently on view in Infinite Blue.During the War of Independence with Spain (1810–21), the sarape—a rectangular woven garment with a central opening for the wearer’s head—became a symbol of Mexican national dress. Strongly identified with horsemanship, the garment was worn in different ways, such as folded over one shoulder or as a poncho. This example from the northern Mexican town of Saltillo features the characteristic central medallion and incorporates natural indigo-dyed wool in its kaleidoscopic geometric and floral designs.Mexican artist.
