newsiepedia:PULITZER: Know what I was doing when I wasyour age? I was in a war. TheCivil War. JACK: I heard of it. You win?Can I just say I LOVE this line? Jack is refusing to be intimidated by Pulitzer, saying that he won’t back down from this fight. But he’s also hardcore roasting him by implying that he would side with the confederates, since he treats his workers like slaves. (It could also be a pun because Pulitzer hates the newsboy union, and Jack is implying he hated the historical union as well).JustHe’s so sassy~ mod stringsI also love this line, mostly because Jack is clearly trying to make Pulitzer angry by pointing out how ironic it is that a man who fought for the Union during the Civil War would have little regard for his worker’s rights, as well as implying that Pulitzer would have fought for the Confederacy and have been sympathetic to slavery because of his attitude towards unions.A brief (not really I’m never brief) historical note! After being turned away from serving in various European armies due to his poor eyesight and overall health, Pulitzer’s passage to the United States was paid by an army recruiter seeking men to enlist as substitutes for draftees. Pulitzer arrived in Boston in 1864 at the age of 17 and enlisted in the Lincoln Cavalry, a unit composed mainly of German immigrants. He served with them until June 5th, 1865, when he received an honorable discharge. -- source link
