How to take a hiatus without being a fartbag. Also applies to Semi-HiatusThis is a simply guide of how to take a hiatus from a roleplay group and make it easiest on the admins. Which in turn, helps you keep your characters.TerminologyFirst off I’m going to define the difference between hiatus and semi-hiatus for those that may not know. Now, this may be different for how others see them but I use the terms as such:Hiatus: A period of time where you may not get a chance to post at all. This is usually taken during vacations, or some other such time when you need to be away from the RP completely.Semi-Hiatus: A period of time where you might get a chance to post, but you’re not sure. Posting times may be over he limit, if you get a chance to post at all.EtiquetteMessage the main of the roleplay you’re a part of. Don’t post int he OOC. Don’t message the admins on another forum unless it’s an emergency, message the main. It’ll make it easier for them to keep track of since they’ll be on the main when they get it. It’s the cleanest, neatest way to keep track of things.Contact them before you have to leave, and when you’re actually leaving.Make sure they get the message, wait for a confirmation, then go ahead and live life, but if you have any warning you’ll need a hiatus, they should too. Give a date. Don’t just say “I need a hiatus. Bye.” and leave. Don’t leave the admins guessing when you’ll be back. Give them a date, so they have something to shoot for. Never just leave it open ended because there is a point when they’ll give up and it’s not fair to others to hold the role for you when you are no longer interested.Tell you partners. Especially ship partners, or family members if the characters are in a relationship already. Since chances are they’ll be spending time together, even if you and your partner won’t be talking/roleplaying it out. Just because you’re on hiatus doesn’t mean your character disappears. Talk it out, will they go on dates? Spend most of the time in doors? Or just give them the okay to make stuff up as they go, at the least. Don’t leave them hanging if you’re playing a character that’s a big part of their life.Keep in contact if you can.Keep up to date on reading, even if you don’t have time to post, check in with the group. Tell the admins if you’re going to need more time, or if you might back sooner than planned. When you’re back TELL THE ADMINS.It’s fair to assume if you’re posting that you’re back, but it’ll be easier to take you off the list if you remind them, nicely that you’re back.Don’t be gone longer than the date you gave.It makes it seem like you don’t care about the roleplay. Unless it was an absolute emergency, in which case it’s understandable and can usually be forgiven… but don’t let it happen every time you take a hiatus. We’ve all heard the story of the boy who cried wolf right? There is a point when you’ll just sound like you’re making up a story so you can keep your role. Don’t take a hiatus every other week. Seriously, when you’ve been on hiatus longer than you’ve been active in the group, what’s the point? And that about wraps it up I believe. If you’re courteous and responsible in keeping your admins up to date and informed then there shouldn’t be any problems. Never rely on the OOC to keep them up to date, it’s easy to miss things among the chatter. In summary: Communication is key. If you’re not communicating you’re being a fartbag. -- source link
