From 1956 to 1963, Daughters of Bilitis co-founder Phyllis Lyon edited “The Ladder” with the assistance of her lifelong partner (and future wife) Del Martin. In 1963, Barbara Gittings, head of the New York chapter of DOB, took over as editor of the magazine, giving it a far more politically urgent tone. The drawings on the cover were replaced by photographs of women, and, with the exception of the first two covers under Gittings’ tenure, the rest of the covers of “The Ladder” featured photographs by Kay Tobin. In January 1966, activist Lilli Vincenz appeared on the cover as a named model without sunglasses and not in profile; she was, in other words, completely visible–a first for “The Ladder,” and for the country. #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #lgbttheirstory #lgbtpride #theladder #barbaragittings #kaytobin #lillivincenz #phyllislyon #delmartin #foundingparents (at New York, New York) -- source link
