This is Newgrange, a prehistoric monument, in County Meath, Ireland. It may not look like much, but it’s actually one of the most historically significant locations in not only in Ireland, but in Europe. It was constructed during the Neolithic period around 5000 years ago, making it older than the Great Pyramids of Egypt and Stonehenge in England. Situated on the fertile plains of the Boyne River, farming communities thrived in the area. What makes Newgrange particularly special is that, like Stonehenge, during the Winter Solstice, a beam of sunlight travels the length of the tomb, illuminating the floor. Newgrange is a designated World Heritage Site by UNESCO and attracts in the region of 200,000 visitors annually. Each tour takes 15 people into the tomb itself and for entry to the passage tomb around the Solstice, a lottery of sorts is done in which around 50 people get to experience the wonder. -Jean Visitor Information: http://www.newgrange.com/ -- source link
