steamship-historical-society: Today in 1959, the first nuclear powered passenger ship, NS Savannah, was launched. Built as a demonstration ship for President Eisenhower’s “Atoms for Peace” program, she wasn’t meant to be especially profitable. She was in service from 1962 to 1972, but only carried passengers until 1965. In 1964 she sailed to Europe, where 150,000 total people toured her decks. She was built by New York Shipbuilding, and designed by George Sharp Inc. (SSHSA has a collection of George Sharp designs, including beautiful watercolors and photographs of vessels and interiors. Contact us at [email protected] for information)About the images: The souvenir card was donated via post in September 1959, addressed to SSHSA founder and secretary Edwin Patt. Mr. Patt was a beloved member, whose energy brought together the beginnings of the society, as well as the society’s first collection of books, artifacts and photos. The donor most certainly had no idea that the envelope for his modest donation would become an interesting artifact itself. 3 cents for such pretty stamps, including one featuring the original SS Savannah, the first steamship to cross the Atlantic! www.sshsa.org -- source link
