Inktober 7th – Eastern Lesser Bamboo Lemur! Finally almost caught up! Whew!! Doodled this one in a hurry, so it’s not great, but EHH. WHAT CAN YA DO?Day 7’s pick was the Eastern Lesser Bamboo Lemur (Hapalemur griseus sp.)!They’re also known as the “grey bamboo lemur”, but that can become a bit confusing since, well… MOST bamboo lemurs are grey! With the exception of the Golden and Greater bamboo lemurs, all the other bamboo lemurs look very similar. Looks are deceiving, though, because each species has a very specialized & unique ecological niche!Fact #7!Why the “trinomial” scientific name? – The grey bamboo lemur is one of only 2 lemur species that has recognized subspecies (the other of which being the black and white ruffed lemur)!Subspecies are populations living in different areas, which may have slight variations in appearance, but the differences between these groups are not genetically significant. These subspecies could readily interbreed to ensure the survival of their respective species, and that interbreeding would be of little to no consequence to the species, as a whole.Tigers are an example of this: there is only ONE species of tiger, which has been split into subspecies.Conversely, aside from the 3 bamboo lemur subspecies and 3 black and white ruffed lemur subspecies, ALL OTHER LEMURS are entirely separate, distinctive, and highly-important species!!If you love lemurs (and, c'mon– who doesn’t??) and would like to help with their conservation, consider:1. Raise awareness!! Spread the word about how badly these guys need help!2. DRAW LEMURS!! Join us for #Hallowleem and the #WorldLemurFestival by drawing a lemur & sharing it online (along with information about how endangered they are!)3. DONATE! The Lemur Conservation Network is a great way to look up different organizations, so you can find the perfect one to donate to!HALLOWLEEM 2016!Day 6 – Day 7 – …Art © Zahzu -- source link
