“Sentenced For Theft,” Toronto Globe. December 22, 1930. Page 05.—-Sturgeon Falls, Dec. 21. (Special.) - Thomas Chaput and Lebo Conto, North Bay youths, were each sentenced to 27 months in Portsmouth Penitentiary by Magistrate Portier yesterday, when they pleaded guilty to charges of theft from the Regent Theatre here. On Aug. 16, the pair stole a safe from the theatre, transported it to Meadowside, where they broke it open. Chaput and Conto were taken to North Bay, where Conto will face two charges, one of theft from a toolhouse and the other of breaking and entering McDonald’s warehouse.[AL: Conto was also sentenced for robbery with violence in association with a third man, all terms to be concurrent. Chaput was an Indigenous young man, aged 21, and listed as a ‘Ojibway’ on his prisoner entry information. He had two infractions against the regulations, and worked on the prison farm at Kingston Penitentiary. He was released in August 1932. Conto was placed in the quarry gang, and was much more troublesome. The child of Italian immigrants, he was born in North Bay and was 19 at the time of these crimes. He took part in the 1932 riot and agreed with all the demands of the strikers for more recreation, letter writing privileges, work conditions and the creation of an inmate committee. He was released in January 1933. This was his first time in penitentiary, but not his last, with two more terms in 1936 and 1940.] -- source link
