mochitori:At last, the time has come for you to sit down (unless you already are sitting down, which is probably the case) and be embraced by the radioactive delight that is Welcome To Night Vale. Read on and let the desert heat of this small town envelop you with its warmth and paranormal madness.[coughs] [checks microphone] And now for a bullet list.Welcome to Night Vale is a semimonthly podcast series created by Commonplace Books (in which an official show description can be found). On average, the episodes are ~20 minutes long each and they are free to listen and download. You can subscribe to this podcast on iTunes or Feedburner or other places (hmm, maybe). New episodes come out every 1st and 15th of every month.Think of it as a Surreal Humor/Horror radio drama, if you will. Or a strange combination of The Twilight Zone and NPR.Setting wise, it is about a desert community called Night Vale, which is perhaps the most paranormal town you can possibly fathom and its desensitized citizens consider it quite normal, maybe even safe, even though it isn’t safe at all. Cecil Baldwin, the host, narrates what’s going on in the town along with traffic reports, announcements of secret government agencies, and the lights that float above the Arby’s and the Void behind it.It also features recurring characters, like Carlos the scientist who moves into Night Vale to investigate it (and the one Cecil crushes on), the Apache Tracker who Cecil calls a racist jerk because he wears goofy/stereotypical Native American attire, the City Council that banned all writing utensils, and more.In between the news you also get to know Cecil himself and what he thinks of the situations that happen in the town. He will probably enamor you with his smooth and sonorous voice as he calmly reports you all the terrors that happen in Night Vale. Cecil may sound like a professional radio show host buT DO NOT BE FOOLED HE IS A MAN WITH A LOT OF EMOTION AND HE IS BASICALLY A SMITTEN KITTEN IN LOVE THAT HAPPENS TO HAVE A GREAT VOICE.As a warning, the show’s horror includes: hallucinations, body horror, gore, a canyon that is literally breathtaking, angels that change light bulbs, insect communities, whispering plants, Desert Bluffs (for shame), the dog park you cannot enter, and much more. In hindsight, this isn’t so much as a warning but simply part of the great Night Vale experience. In conclusion, I may not have done a good job in explaining what this beautiful and perfect show is, but I tried.[checks microphone] And now for some links that will probably serve more purpose than my ghastly explanation of things. The official website.Great powerpoint I found about this show. The official Night Vale twitter.TranscriptsList of musicians that contributed to the show. The twitters of the creators: Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor.Feel free to contribute to this post, if you reblog it, and I hope you find this show just as creepy and endearing as I do.This is seriously my favorite thing in the world. I marathoned 17 episodes when I discovered it. -- source link
