Sailor Saturn: Original Fuku The original fuku appeared in the 3rd season of the anime and in the third and forth arc of the manga. The fuku in both versions are nearly identical and contains the most diverse and different elements for a standard fuku. Colors: Purple and Maroon Saturn’s primary color is purple, which in Japanese color symbology ties directly to her themes of death and destruction. Purple represents death and evil, often worn by antagonists in Japanese media. Although Saturn becomes a cherished and accepted addition to the team, initially she was considered to be the enemy as her revival heralded the destruction of the entire planet. Her entire purpose was to destroy the world shortly after awakening. Saturn is the only Sailor that goes through a drastic coloration change between her initial awakening and later forms. Her original fuku is dark purple, symbolizing gloom and sadness. As a tragic character with powers of bringing death, the dark hue suits her original fuku and duty at the time it was worn. Later on her fuku changes to a bright purple (but I’ll touch on that in another post). Purple is also associated with spirituality, sacred, and fulfillment. In many ways Saturn’s duties fit these descriptions. Her power of destruction are actually a cleansing that allows for rebirth and creation, making her initial duty reminiscent of initial steps in a sacred and spiritual process. Saturn’s attitude towards her duty and her Princess is one of seriousness. She speaks formally, with much respect, honor, and belief in the people she serves. We can see this when she formally asks Princess Serenity to release the spirits of the Sailor Quartet in the Dream Arc and when she asks that the Starlights believe in her princess in the Stars season. The only other Sailor to speak in such formalities is Pluto. As Hotaru her main story line was to fight the invading spirit of Mistress 9 within her body, eventually awakening as Sailor Saturn and eliminating Mistress 9 all together. She also receives visions of the future and grows rapidly in order to prepare for the incoming battle during Stars. In all Hotaru ends up being a spiritual force tied to duty. Saturn’s secondary color fluctuates between a dark red, maroon, and bronze color, though typically she is depicted in maroon. To be marooned means to be stranded, isolated, or abandoned. Saturn shares this color with Pluto, and like Pluto, her initial duty left her isolated and abandoned until her awakening to destroy the world. In the manga bringing the three Talismans together summons her to complete her duty. When Saturn is summoned, she is a fully realized and garbed Sailor Soldier looking to be a young teen. This could mean that Saturn had been left in some sort of stasis or limbo waiting for the Talismans to summon her. After she completes her duty she dies. Guardian Cosmos tells Usagi in the Stars arc that Sailor Crystals can be reborn, dying and returning to the Galaxy Cauldron in order to be reborn. It is likely that Saturn was intended to repeat the cycle of death and rebirth until Usagi essentially freed her at the end of Infinity/S. As a red-brown color, it also symbolizes harvest and fall. The Roman god Saturn is celebrated with the harvest and sowing in December. Saturn’s weapon, the Silence Glaive, is a representation of a scythe usually depicted with Saturn and the Greek counterpart Cronus, which is a tool used for harvesting. Brooch and Jewelry Saturn’s brooch is a several point clear/white crystal, similar in shape to the Heart Crystals in the S season in the anime and more of a half sphere of pointed shards in the manga. There is no confirmed information in regards to what type of stone is used for her brooch, but it does resemble Quartz Crystal cluster which is mainly used for healing. Although Saturn is tied to death or cleansing, as a civilian Hotaru has the gift of healing physical injuries. Her brooch may also be made up of a more solid white Calcite cluster which is also used for cleansing and healing. In the anime, since her brooch is similar in shape to the Pure Heart Crystals, her brooch could signify her powers of purification through death. It can also serve as her tie to Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto whose pure hearts allows them access to the Talisman. More than likely it was probably a thematic choice to match her brooch to the Heart Crystals rather than a symbolic one. Saturn’s brooch design is repeated on her choker, and likely the same gem is found in her tiara. She also wears small Saturn shaped earrings with crystals hanging from the bottom. Hotaru’s image stone is amethyst, this is represented in the light purple-pink touches in some of her jewelry. Amethyst is her birth stone and is also strongly tied to healing. Its initial use was to guard against drunkenness, but was later use to for protection in Ancient Egypt and then to help focus and promote healing by healers. Saturn is essentially the last line of defense set by Queen Serenity, to protect by wiping out evil entirely. As I mentioned previously, this could be seen as an act of cleansing, or healing through cleansing. This is likely also linked to Hotaru’s regenerative and healing powers. Amethyst is also considered the Bishop’s Stone and symbolizes spiritual wisdom as well as humility and sincerity. Despite her age, Hotaru tends to embody a wisdom and spirituality beyond her years. She readily accepts her duties of destruction and solitude as a necessary means of protection and defense, and is sincere in her devoted to serving the Moon family. Although Saturn wields so much power, she treats her power with respect. She does not boast of her strengths or makes show of it despite her reputation far preceding her. When facing Galaxia in the anime, Galaxia showed fear and knowledge of Saturn’s powers despite having never met Saturn before. As Galaxia is from a far away solar system, this means Saturn’s reputation is well known to a certain degree. Shoulder Cuffs and Gloves Saturn’s shoulder cuffs resemble petals and also wings due to the tri-scallop shape. As wings, this may directly contrast Saturn’s initial purpose, and that is to bring ruin. It likens her to the idea of the “angel of death.” The shoulder cuffs are depicted as white to a light pink, furthering the contrast between the delicateness of the shoulder cuffs and her powers. Her gloves are elbow length with three rolls, though the final roll ends in a point. Between her cloves, shoulder cuffs, and brooch, she seems to have a slight pointy and sharp theme to her costume. This could allude back to her crystal theme or as a visual aid to show that she does poses a great spike in power in comparison to the rest of her fellow Sailors. Boots Saturn wears knee length purple boots with white laces running up most of the boot to the top. Her boots almost look antiquated in comparison to the others, which may coincided with her being a relic of the past. The length of her boots also helps balance her outfit design wise. At a glance, this would make Saturn appear to be a balanced and stable character. She largely is with her realistic attitude and loyalty to the Moon family. If we look at boots worn by Sailors we have met before her, we can see that they’re a hybrid of Jupiter and the standard boots Mercury, Moon, and Pluto wear. With this in mind, we can theorize that Saturn may poses qualities of each of these Sailors. She contains the raw power of Jupiter while also adhering to the formalities of her duties like Mercury and Pluto. Her boots also cover more leg, and could better protect her as she is not a more combat engaged fighter. -- source link
