This Thursday seven artists with work in our collection will join forces in our galleries to discuss their works and honor our retiring director Arnold Lehman. Hear from a diverse range of artists who have contributed important work in the last few decades. These artists caught the eye of Arnold Lehman who recognized their value and contributions to contemporary culture, and captivated our visitors to become BKM favorites. Here’s more on the artists who will be participating:John “CRASH” Matos began bombing train yards in the 1970s and 80s and became a key player in launching the world-wide graffiti movement and it’s recognition in the fine art world.Ran Hwang is an internationally renowned installation artist from South Korea. She is currently working on a large wall installation for her solo exhibition at MASS MoCA which opens this weekend.Delphine Fawundu-Buford is a photographer interested in exploring intersections of identity through expression. A self-described hip-hop head, she has documented the culture since 1993 through photography, video, and text. She is currently working on a multimedia project which examines hip-hop’s lyrical dynamics, musical production, and its roles in social justice movements.Kiki Smith is a feminist artist whose practice addresses the human condition, the body, spirituality and nature, and spans from sculpture and printmaking to installation and textiles.Faith Ringgold is a painter, art activist, feminist and educator best known for her large-scale painted story quilts. Her practice is devoted to demonstrating the importance of family, roots and artistic collaboration. Timothy Greenfield-Sanders is a photographer, filmmaker, and author, best known for his photographs of iconic world leaders and leading cultural figures of our time, including presidents, writers, artists, actors and musicians. Guerrilla Girls is an anonymous collective of feminist artists devoted to fighting sexism and racism in the art world. Lehman’s commitment to freedom of artistic expression in the 1990s is regarded as an iconic moment of the Culture Wars and contemporary art history. It was only fitting then that we honor this commitment by inviting a group of contemporary artists from multiple backgrounds, generations and artistic practices to represent themselves and their work. Catch them all during their #Diverseworks pop-up talks Thursday, June 18!Posted by Lauren Zelaya -- source link
