stayven-carnivale: The Old Operating Theatre Museum & Herb Garret (Part 1)Hidden away in the attic of the 1703 St Thomas’ Church and only accessible by a narrow 32 step spiral staircase, The Old Operating Theatre is the oldest surgical theatre in Europe still in existence. Dating from 1822 it is an incredible survivor from the period of surgery before the introduction of anaesthetics and antiseptics. The original timber framed Herb Garret was used in the 18th and 19th centuries by the St. Thomas’ Hospital apothecaries to store herbs and make medicines. The museum collections include an original 19th century operating table, surgical instruments, apothecaries’ equipment and medical books and papers dating from the 1700s. -- source link
