Aigues-Mortes is one of my favorite places in southern France, and this painting, along with one other in the exhibition truly captures the essence of the ancient walled town. This is a key painting in an excellent exhibit “Frédéric Bazille and the Birth of Impressionism” at the National Gallery of Art open for another Week to 9 July. Bazille was a native of Montpellier and a painter of Occitanie during his all too brief career - he was killed during the Franco-Prussian war at age 29. Anyone in Washington while it is open should make a trip to the National Gallery for this quite impressive show. (The photos are mine as the Gallery now allows non-flash photography in many of its exhibits.) -- source link
