What sort of game does Lost Pages want to be? Words ahead.Gonna brainspill a bit here, probably pretty confused reading ahead. All still subject to change. To summarize it “shortly”, I want Lost Pages to be mainly about exploring the fantasy world the player character roams. I’m going for a third person view, not unlike Dark Souls or Breath of the Wild. The player character will be some sort of water mage person. Combat will be a thing, though I honestly don’t yet know how much of it I want. Dialgoue and a quest system will be necessary, too.The setting is a desert of unknown origin, known for its strange property of drawing magic tomes to it and filling them with life, i.e. flying books. The longer they stay in the desert, the more powerful they get, although they run the risk of losing their pages or perhaps an even worse fate. Someone had the idea of putting a library in the middle of it, probably some sort of absent-minded, book-loving wizard. Thus appears the job of the desert librarians, rounding up stray books in the deserts and taking care of the wounded/broken ones. Next to exploring the desert and its places this will be the main mechanic, collecting pages, hunting down feral magic books, rescuing overly enthusiastic tomes from certain flaying, patching up broken ones (and reading goodnight stories to them). Some of these tomes might grant the player character new abilities, think Metroidvania. One of the plot points will be the reason why all the books end up here… So: I need to design places the player actually wants to explore. Not just some plain desert, I need something more along the lines of Journey, locations that make you want to search for them…The library itself must of course be the key part, serving as some sort of hub. But hey, if I can’t make a magic library designed to accomodate living books interesting and fun, I might as well stop right now ;).Buildings and props will be slightly arabic/indian, clothing probably some sort of desert fantasy mix.The player character is a novice, probably just arrived at the library. Of course, a novice will not be allowed to roam around the deserts, so the first area will be some sort of tutorial/training place near the library. Why is your character here? Did your mentor send you for a year of intership? Are you looking for a certain magic ancestor tome, thought to be long lost to time? Searching for a cure of some sort of disease your hometown suffers from? Dunno yet, story still needs some serious ironing out. Though for some reason I’m very particalur to the whole water mage in desert scenario, as this might enable the player to do stuff the locals are not capabable of.Of course, a library needs more personnel than just one novice. I’m gonna need to create a cast of characters for support and story. The scorpion lady from a certain picture will probably be included. Also, I want floaty crystals for the main reason of growing up reading Möbius (Note to self: Jean Giraud for reference folder). Power sources, light bulbs, eggshells, not sure. Some may be natural, some others manufactured. So next to the magic books the desert now has a second precious resource people besides wizards will be interested in…oh hey, now there’s a reason why there might be trade outposts, mining stations and crystal pirates (in airships?) around, making the desert a little more lively.Well, okay, Möbius isn’t the only reason for crystals in the game. That lantern the player character carries around? That’s supposed to be a storage device for the collected books among other things because otherwise I would have to display all those books you carry around with you (Yes, it’s a magic pokeball). The lantern may also be used as a lure or to placate feral tomes.Yeah, no way this is gonna fly. I need to boil all of this down into one sentence: “Lost Pages is a game about exploring a desert filled with magic tomes and your job is collecting all of them.” Oh god, am I trying to recreate Pokemon? -- source link
