Here’s how:Cartoon Network, which not along ago aired things like this:It’s trajectory of change is representative of how far America’s entertainment has come. How far human people have come. The Steven Universe, itself is the embodiment of queerness, written by queer people, people of color, has made it’s way into being. With the weight and the gravitas of their character Garnet, they’re now able to deliver messages that will shape reality for thousands of young people. (Do YOU REMEMBER seeing “don’t be racist” messaging growing up? NO. It was a hush hush thing because “everything is fine”. Younger kids are growing up in almost a parallel universe from before OUR parents were even old which is another story entirely but I digress)Garnet represents so much black history. Everything from the black power movement to the natural hair movement to black dance, black panther..she’s our ICONOGRAPHY, that has risen o the top into today’s culture and holds so much power. I know there are people who’ll disagree with me but…the WAY this piece is written, how accurate the experience is summed up, with such grace and finesse, is a true piece of pop culture history, which as we know shapes our entire reality. Even down to the dynamics at the end that are a nod to queer humor with the little wink which is really indicative of the jokes like “ohh haha they were COUSINS” WINKY WONK.The obviously white director who wrote the damn script and how SHITTY it is because HAHAHA THAT IS THE JOKEFURTHER STILL!! They had to deal with all the fan speculation in the beginning when the show first aired: “Is GArNEt BLAck??”and ALL the drama that ensued there….and then to have affirmed it so meticulously in the later years that yes she is code written for blackness for black people etc etc….I mean THAT ALONE is progress within people!
