renatagrieco:June 6, 2018 - Royal Penguin (Eudyptes schlegeli)Breeding mainly on Macquarie Island, between Tasmania and Antarctica, and on nearby Bishop and Clerk Islands, these penguins are found in the southern seas around Australia and Antarctica during the rest of the year. While krill forms the majority of their diet, they also eat fish and squid. They breed in colonies with Rockhopper Penguins, which can include as many as 500,000 birds. Males return to the breeding colonies first, building nests on the ground lined with grasses and stones. Several weeks later the females return and males perform courtship displays to attract them. For the first few weeks of the chicks’ lives, males brood them while females bring them food. Later both parents gather food for the chicks, which join groups called crèches. Classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN, they have recovered somewhat from a severe decline caused by hunting in the 19th century. The main threats they currently face are from climate change and disease, though their population is considered stable.go follow Renata Grieco, she is my favorite artist here. I think she draws a different bird every day, isn’t amazing? -- source link
