A wounded lion struggles after being shot with arrows in the royal lion hunt of Ashurbanipal, ca. 640 BCE. Ashurbanipal was the ruler of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, which encompassed much of the modern day Middle East. In Ashurbanipal’s time, the Asiatic Lion (now endangered, with only about 500 living individuals) were found much more widely. Mesopotamian kings made it a point of pride to hunt the lions and use the hunts as proof of their greatness.{WHF} {HTE} -- source link
