The Larsen-Winteross 1884, the first lever action shotgun? The common answer to what was the first lever action shotgun is commonly answered with the Winchester 1887, a famous John Browning design. However, there is one lever shotgun that puts that assertion to question, The Larsen Winteross Patent 1884, which predates the M1887 by three years.Created by the Norwegian gun designer August Larsen, and an industrialist named Witneross, the Larsen Winteross was a lever action shotgun that was chambered for 13 gauge and 16 gauge. It had a tubular magazine which was loaded from a port near the front end of the tube. A very sturdy and well made design, they were made in limited numbers in Denmark. While made with exceptional quality, they were more expensive than the typical shotgun, and were typically only purchased by wealthier individuals for hunting. Today they are extremely rare. -- source link
