smilewhileyourebleedin:History of Weapons and Firearms Weapon two:1795 Reproduction Springfield Armory Smoothbore FlintlockThe 1795 Springfield Armory Flintlock was produced in American for the United States Army and used through to the war of 1812. It was largely based on the French Charleville (the barrel bands, brass front sight post, etc.), but also had attributes similar to the English Brown Bess (the tell tale cuts in the butt stock). It has a 69 caliber barrel and fired a 64 caliber lead ball. The trigger on this long gun is about 20 pounds but this is not a negative since the rifles were not aimed. On the end of the barrel is the flintlocks most important weapon, the lug for the socket bayonet. Though Mel Gibson’s “The Patriot” would have us believe otherwise, the bayonet was more often than not the deciding factor in most engagements due to the horrendous accuracy of the flintlock. With an effective range of 30-100 yards at a rate of 5 rounds a minute, only about 5% of all rounds fired hit their targets. -- source link
