Why do pocket pistols tend to shoot high or low? When I first started my interest in pocket pistols one of the things that I immediately noticed was that they tended to either shoot very high or very low. Why is that? It all has to do with the line of sight between the rear sight and front sight. In many pocket pistols, especially automatics, the front sight tends to be short and stubby. This is to prevent snagging on clothing and make it easier to carry. Yet at the same time the rear sight tends to sit slightly higher than the front sight. This will cause the user to hold the front sight up a bit to sight in with the rear sight (SEE FIG 1 Ruger LCP) Notice the small gap in between the rear sight and front sight.Other pocket pistols tend to have a very large front sight but small rear sight, especially revolvers. Some may not have a rear sight at all. This will cause the user to hold the front sight lower to align with the rear sight, obviously causing the user to aim low. (SEE FIG 2 Ruger LCR)Finally in a figure 3 I have the most accurate pocket pistol that I have ever fired, the Beretta 21A Bobcat. Notice how the front and rear sight are on an even plane with each other. If a user is aiming properly the pistol should be held perfectly level. -- source link
