juliedillon:juliedillon:Catalog of Merfolk - Art Challenge! This post got me thinking about mermaids and all the different ways they could be depicted. So I thought it might be fun to get everyone involved in making a big collection of illustrations and sketches of various diverse types of merfolk. :) Your Task: Draw some merfolk! Mermaids of different race and ethnicity, mermaids of different shapes and sizes, non-binary mermaids, mermaids based on different kinds of sea creatures, mermaids that have evolved specifically for various ecological niche, etc. Creativity and diversity is key. Please try to avoid the typical skinny blonde regular-fish-tail trope, not because there’s anything wrong with that depiction (there isn’t!) but because there’s already so much of that style of art available, and the point here is to provide some new takes. (and yes I realize the irony of using a classic Waterhouse painting of a skinny mermaid with a basic fishtail for the intro pic). ;) Deadline: March 10th. I will collect all the entries and post them in one big master post (unless you don’t want me to include it). To be included, please either reblog this with your art, post under the ‘Catalog of Merfolk’ tag, send me a note/fanmail, or email me your entry at jdillon82 @ gmail dot com with “Catalog of Merfolk” in the subject line. This is not a competition or a juried post, it is just for fun (although I may highlight some of the best ones at the top of the post). You can enter as many times as you like, and all skill levels and art styles welcome. Your entry can be anything from a sketch to a fully rendered scene. If you like, feel free to include a little writeup about your mermaid/merman, about where they live, what inspired your design, etc. Also feel free to reblog with suggestions of different types of merfolk for other artists to possibly illustrate. If this turns out to be something fun, maybe every other month or so we can all tackle another fantasy trope (like lady warriors, elves, faeries, etc) and see what we can do with it. :) reblog for the evening :) -- source link
