gatikmaverick:gatikmaverick:gatikmaverick:gatikmaverick:gatikmaverick:Welcome to the world of diagnosing asexual people with a incredibly harmful and unneeded medical diagnosis. One that can be treated (mostly in woman) with a fancy new pill (or should I say misogyny). Any claim you’ve heard that Hypoactive Sexual Desire disorder is not referring to asexuality is a blatant lie. The very name of the disorder is the definition of asexuality. But if you don’t believe me here is an actual diagnostic book that directly pulls from the DSM (the book by which mental disorders are organized, taught, and diagnosed from). This book is made to be a tool by which a mental health professional could better access the criteria of a disorder when consulting a specific patient. This book includes asexuality right along side gender dysphoria disorders under the name ‘Hypoactive sexual desire disorder’. I have pointed out a few key phrases for you to review but have included full texts for further reading. Please note the initial statements including phrases such as: “I’m just not into sex,” and how this directly parallels asexuals. Also note the more recent adjustment to the DSM removing a particular amount of sex from the diagnostic criteria, because this isn’t about people who want to have sex but don’t enjoy it, but rather people who may have ‘normal’ sex lives (in frequency) who are just not into sex and experience no attraction. I’d also like to point out (and I have in the images above) that an asexual person can be brought in for this condition against their will and how they may be feeling badly not because of the disorder but because of societal pressure or pressure from their partner. Which is to say this is not a disorder distressing the individual, but something deemed unhealthy for another purpose. That being it’s not accepted, understood, or validated by people despite it being a natural expression of the subjects sexuality. That being: none at all. This is all real. You can look up the book for yourself. Order it. Read it over. But never tell me my sexuality wasn’t and continues to be pathogenized. Because despite lazy amendments that try to exclude asexuals who haven’t been made to hate themselves for their sexuality, people are still treated for this unnecessarily. People are subject to medications, therapies, and physical examinations with nothing wrong with them. Because they happen to be asexual. @transamazon I’d like an apology.Lol this got marked sensitive. I mean, I can get that a little since it’s literally a book called sexual dysfunction. But heh.No where in here does it say that if the person in question who literally qualifies as asexual suffers do they qualify for treatment and those who do not suffer do not qualify for treatment. And even if that were stated it’s the same as saying “Conversion therapy should be available for those who want it”. That’s not okay. You know why? Because there’s nothing actually wrong with the person. The reason they are suffering or distressed is because of society, or their partner pressuring them into sex. That’s not an excuse for this in any way shape or form and if I hear it again you will instantly be blocked because you’re missing the point by miles and there’s literally nothing I can do to help clear it up for you.As far as I’m concerned any claim that we’re not institutionally oppressed is over. It’s nonsense. And it always was.Its literally like the DSM has a habit of ‘exceptions’ being included when a disorder is deemed unnecessary but they don’t want to openly admit they’re wrong all at once. Exceptions included in the diagnostic that are basically ‘if we haven’t made them feel broken yet about who they are then they’re fine. We’ll ‘fix’ them when they’re convinced our diagnostic that fits their sexuality to a T is correct and that they’re just sick after all’ is bull. I should not be seeing this argument being made against asexual people who are still literally included in the DSM. “When the diagnosis of homosexuality was deleted in 1973, the APA did not initially embrace a normal variant model of homosexuality (Drescher 1998, Bayer 1987, Krajeski 1996). In recognition of the opposition, it made a compromise. The DSM-II diagnosis of Sexual Orientation Disturbance (SOD) replaced Homosexuality. Accordingly, individuals comfortable with their homosexuality were no longer considered mentally ill. Only those who were “in conflict with” their sexual orientation had a mental disorder (SOD). This compromise engendered continued controversy. Those opposing it pointed out there were no reported cases of unhappy heterosexual individuals seeking treatment to become homosexual. This problem was addressed in the 1980’s DSM-III where SOD was replaced by ego-dystonic homosexuality (EDH).“Source: http://www.aglp.org/gap/1_history/#Medicalizing_Sexual_Inversion“When DSM-III was revised in 1987, ego-dystonic homosexuality was deleted as a diagnostic entity because “almost all people who are homosexual first go through a phase in which their homosexuality is ego dystonic [A sustained pattern of overt homosexual arousal that is a source of distress.]” (Appendix, DSM-III-R). This category is not included in DSM-IV.“Source: http://www.webref.org/psychology/h/homosexuality-ego-dystonic.htmNo more excuses because exceptions were made to the DSM. I’m so sick of it. Asexuality was in the DSM and is still diagnosed today. There is a drug manufactured to ‘cure’ asexuality and you should be outraged if you know anything about LGBT+ history. -- source link
