Hyperphyscia syncollaSmooth shadow-crust lichenSometimes, y’all. Lichenology is weird. Like, I am reading multiple published descriptions of H. syncolla that describe the surface coloration as gray-brow to dark brown. And yet most of the pictures of it I can find show it as green or gray? Like, really green? Like bright green or blue-green? Or like, just gray. I am so confused. So just bear with me here. H. syncolla is a foliose-crustose lichen that grows in round patches held fast the substrate surface. It has narrow lobes near the margins, and appears more warty and bumpy toward the center. The surface varies in color, and is often coated in thick, pale pruina. It has numerous apothecia with an obvious margin, and smooth, dark brown discs. H. syncolla grows on *favorite word incoming* riparian (meaning near a river/stream) trees in nutrient rich, low-intermediate elevations. I found reports of it growing in North America, South America, Africa, and Asia. It’s probably being discovered more often now that folks can compare images with others and realize that written descriptions do not always reflect reality in form and color. Often descriptions are based on herbarium specimens, or individuals from limited locales, when in reality there is a lot more variation in color and form. It happens. And that’s why there is still so much to discover in this field! images: sourceinfo: source | source | source -- source link
