To close out Black History Month, JKX celebrates the work of Dr. George Carruthers, an inventor, engineer and astrophysicist. His invention, the ultraviolet camera/spectrograph, allows us to image both Earth and space from the surface of the moon providing new insight into how our universe works. Dr. Carruthers’ imaging device was used in the first moon-based observatory in the Apollo 16 mission providing the first images of earth in ultraviolet light (UV). These images provided insight into the hydrogen atmosphere and the polar auroris. He also developed cameras that allowed us to capture UV images of the Comet Halley. Dr. Carruthers’ research is greatly praised earning him several awards and recognitions including NASA’s Exceptional Achievement Scientific Award Medal (@nasa), a National Science Foundation (@nsfgov) Fellow and induction to the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame (@inventorshof). Thank you Dr. George Carruthers for your out of this world research! #bhm #blackandstem #blackhistorymonth2020✊✊✊ https://www.instagram.com/p/B9KBjtrJw28/?igshid=tjkd4kjoxndp -- source link
