OKAY THIS HAS BEEN BOTHERING ME. Walk with me a moment. So normally in this situation, when you talk about calling in your decisive backup, you say “cavalry,” because it means mounted troops. (English really loves completely outdated expressions, it’s sort of adorable.)But this is what I heard in the episode, too, it’s not a mistake on the gif maker’s part–she said “call in the damn calvary." Why do I give a damn, you ask? Because Calvary (not cavalry) is one of the names for the hill where Jesus died. It’s from a Latin name meaning "the place of the skull” (which is what all the Aramaic names more or less mean too, for anyone keeping score at home.“ So just. What the hell. I have no theory, I have no explanation. It’s literally only a difference of where the L goes, and in real life people mix them up all the time because obviously. Nicole Beharie could have just said the wrong one–but then wouldn’t they do another take? I also find it really hard to believe that especially on this particular show it was a writers’ mistake and never got caught all the way through the pipeline. Can it really be that in a show so focused on apocalyptic vaguely Christian mythology and imagery, somebody managed to mix up Calvary and cavalry and nobody noticed? And if I wanted to suppose that Abbie had some in-story reason for saying this, I have no earthly idea what that reason could possibly be.HELP ME. WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED.[Addendum because what the hell: I was double-checking the latin and this happened:GOOGLE CALM DOWN.] -- source link
