copperbadge:Both of the Cryptids do purr, often and lovingly, but neither quite “properly” – both of them are mainly silent when they do it. For the first two and a half years of their lives, I could tell they were purring only because they were vibrating, and had to keep reminding myself they weren’t shivering. Dearborn does purr now, very softly, but I can tell it’s mainly an extension of her “tortie trill”, and it’s still only audible about half the time she’s actually purring. Polk occasionally manages a kind of low grunt, but even that is rare. Yesterday, however, while I was petting Polk, I apparently hit just the right spot and she let out a real, proper purr, a loud growling noise that was perfectly audible and recognizable. It only lasted a second, and I’m not sure who was more shocked, me or her. She looked up at me like “The hell was that?” and then went back to silently vibrating. I’m delighted, and while I love them and their silent purring just as they are, I hope it means not only will she work out how to do it and that it’s a good thing, but she can show Dearborn as well. [Description: An image of Polk sitting on the Most Coveted Blanket, paws curled up against her chest, chin resting on one paw, looking pensive. You can’t see it but she is silently purring.] -- source link
