tobreakandblossom:cahun-caha:clothesandbuttons:drlibertybell:Yesterday was the 96th anniversary of Rosa Luxemburg’s death. I’m not hugely knowledgeable about her political or philosophical writing but I feel very attached to an idea of her. When I was writing my dissertation I started every day with a warm-up exercise: write a letter to Rosa Luxemburg. Somewhere between a metalogue and therapeutic practice, my letters to Rosa Luxemburg were a recounting of what I was working on, problems I was facing in the writing and my plans for that day. She was a great audience for the work. Sympathetic to my writing’s main concerns, but not overly knowledgeable about the specific context. I had to really be straight forward when I was talking to her.At the time, I was living with KC, a philosophy PhD student, and we referred to our home as The Knowledge Factory. We decided to unionize and set very fair working conditions for ourselves. To enforce our daily work, we settled on a fictive supervisor who would expect good things, but would be understanding when we struggled. Rosa won the bid for the position beating out Aristotle and Simone de Beauvoir only by a hair.Difficulties with work had to be reported to Rosa in writing. And so began my daily habit of writing her letters. There was one particularly vexed time close to the end of my PhD when my letters to her became more urgent. Rosa must have sensed my despair because one morning, she wrote back.I remember her today, in gratitude.“Freiheit ist immer Freiheit der Andersdenkenden”I am torn between wishing I had an archive like this to detail my writing process, or wanting to forget about it as soon as possible. Either way, thank you Rosa Luxemburg for helping out my friend drlibertybell! “Being human means throwing your whole life on the scales of destiny when need be, all the while rejoicing in every sunny day and every beautiful cloud.” residuetheory!this is so important and it was languishing in my drafts all this time??? -- source link
