katsdom: It can be very uncomfortable to be that person, but it’s very, very important. During my time as a manager and during my time as an officer of various organizations, I’ve also figured out that a work group or organization NEEDS to have the person who will do that when needed. And needs to nurture and protect them because they play a critical role. Organizations where everyone quietly swallows their misgivings and goes along with the plan make horrible mistakes. There are certain super critical “work” settings where this is especially true. Ships, operating rooms and commercial aircraft come to mind. They are all VERY hierarchical. In each case there is one person who is absolutely in charge. Sometimes that person is an autocratic asshole by nature. Sometimes not. But, regardless of the personalities involved, it’s super important that the members of the crew feel empowered to speak up when they see a mistake happening. There have been pretty extensive studies done of this and a lot of work has been done around building that kind of culture. Aircraft have literally flown into mountainsides and ships run aground because everyone was afraid to tell the captain he was making an error. -- source link
