Count Ulrich V of Wurttemberg’s crossbow, 1460. This is the oldest crossbow for which a precise date can be ascertained. Crossbows were probably invented in China as long ago as 650 BCE. They were used in ancient Rome and Greece, but then fell out of favor in Europe between the fall of Rome and the year 1000.
