librinaut: galadhir: shurii:BLACK WIDOW (2021) dir. Cate Shortland What a great idea, just give all your agents immediate menopause with the risks of osteoporosis, night sweats, inability to concentrate, early aging and a chance of their internal organs herniating into the space where their uterus used to be. That’s extremely logical for people you intend to be super-spies /sarcasm I’m so tired of people lacking sex education to the point where they think the uterus is only there to birth babies and give you cramps once a month. It leads to crap like this scene and also to so many women saying idiotic shit like “I want my uterus taken out because I don’t want to have my period :D” or “I want to donate my uterus because I don’t want to have kids anyways”. It also ultimately leads to cases like my grandma, who got her uterus taken out for a condition that could have been treated. But the doctor didn’t care and maybe thought it was “easier” to just let her live on medication and hormones and with new health conditions than to treat her. And she didn’t know better because she had no sex education so she went along with it. I mean, I get it. I have horrible pain and get sick because of my dear uterus. The relationship to my body is endlessly painful and complicated because of dysmorphia and dysphoria. But a lightly muttered “ugh I wish someone would rip my uterus out” is 1) stupid (because it will bring a whole lot of other issues) 2) disrespectful (to any woman who has to get a hysterectomy). Women who have to get their reproductive system removed aren’t “lucky” and no doctor should suggest a procedure like that lightly. And yes, women are forced to undergo hysterectomy under horrible circumstances a lot to control their ability to give birth. Native women in several countries or different kinds of women under the nazi regime for example. And that’s horrible and disgusting. And makes it even more disgusting how this movie is using this life changing, body altering and dangerous procedure as a gimmick for the cool spy ladies with a tragic past ™. Women who were forced into this procedure weren’t meant to be efficient or though or strong afterwards. To imply that you can be forced into this procedure and come out of it just without the ability to have babies and other than that being a-ok and super strong and tough… is incredibly disrespectful. Womens bodies are a battlefield and our ability to give birth is why we are made a warzone. To use this as a gimmick and to ignore the implications of it is tone deaf. Scenes like this and all these dumb tumblr posts with tens of thousands of notes are misogynistic because they support the neglect and misunderstanding of female reproductive health that is still alive and well in the medical field. Women die because for the majority of our past female health and female anatomy was ignored in medical science (and it still is). This scene in a recent (and supposedly “feminist”) movie just shows the gruesome reality of how neglectful and sexist our society still is. -- source link
