And that’s the preferential order. We should be reducing first, then reusing what we can, and recycling should be a distant third option.But capitalism can only make money from the ‘recycling’ part. Oh, man. About three miles from my house growing up was a compact little concrete block building labelled “Bottling Company.” If your mom bought soda at the market, which was just a mile further down the road, it came in lovely curved glass bottles in a cardboard carrier. You drank the soda. Rinsed the bottle, put it back in the carrier. And next time Mom went to the store, she took the empties back. She got a little money off her next purchase, and the bottles went back up the road to the Bottling Company. They put them in an industrial dishwasher, cleaned them, and refilled them with soda. They went a mile back down to the market and around again! Very little waste. Very minimal shipping. People had jobs at the Bottling Company. And the bottles were pretty and felt good in your hand. We really, really need to go back to bottling companies. REUSE!so many posts make such good points and then go “but capitalizm hurr durr” and it makes me sadYeah.
