cracked:In between the bouts of outright physical violence, my brother and I spent a lot of our time in fear. If we said anything at all that Dad didn’t agree with, no matter how minor, he’d fly into a blind rage. You eventually learn to agree with everything that comes out of your abuser’s mouth, no matter how crazy it might sound to you. That’s probably why I became a Cardinals fan.So knowing all of this – that the slightest nothing could make him react that violently – imagine what would happen if you did do something harsh, like call the police. How far would he go if you caused him to spend a night in jail? If he blamed you for his insane eruption after you said you didn’t think All In The Family was funny, what would he do to you if he received a notice to appear in court? You don’t even want to imagine it, so you keep quiet. Not just to the police, but to everyone.See, in most states, if you’re the victim of domestic abuse and the police find out, you don’t have a choice in the prosecution. Which means that if you tell anyone who decides action needs to be taken, it’s out of your hands. And if you tell a teacher, counselor, daycare employee, or someone who works in one of these many other professions, they are required by law to report it. But will your abuser see it that way? Hell no. To him, you did this. You caused him jail time. You cost him his job and reputation. And you will fucking well pay for it.Why So Much Domestic Abuse Goes Unreported: A Firsthand Look -- source link
